SOYBEANS MATURING FALL 2003

2006 was a good year for Sunset View Farms & Ranch. Although we had a very dry summer that hurt pastures and hay production, the crops turned out quite well. The corn produced 120 to 150 bushels per acre, and soybeans produced 40 to 45 bushels per acre.

2007 turned out to be a very good year yield and pricewise. We had a hot dry year, but just enough rains to provide exceptional yields. Corn averaged about 175 bushels, and soybeans 48 bushels per acre. We also weaned a nice calf crop. However the hay crop was very short, baled a lot of straw to help make up loss of hay yield. Prices were excellent corn near $3.25 and beans around $9.00

Just two old cowboys Bob & Chester

About all I can say here is that we are experiencing the highest cattle prices in history. Certainly great news. Now if we can just keep the next low in prices above the previous low we will have made some real progress. Demand seems to be the best ever. An interesting note is that I Recently visited Mr. Jud Lackey who is personal friend who is retired from operating the Jarboe, Lackey Feedlot near Parsons, Kansas. Jud is well versed in the cattle business. He tells me that he believes the Atkins diet is a major player in the increase of demand and prices. Well there's a new turn for you.

We just recently weaned the best set of calves I believe we have ever raised. My brother and Nephew have recently purchased some 400 lb. calves of good quality. A risky business to say the least. I hope the best for them, and also for our calf crop.

Sunset View Working Facilities

These are the cattle working facilities at Sunset View Feedlots.

Last spring we had some of the mildest calving weather ever. With the help of the good weather and the hard work of the Cowboys at Sunset View Ranch we had a record calving percentage this year. Congratulations to Chester, Ranch manager. Also to our excellent Herd manager Mrs. Chester Palmer and Ritchie Palmer, Feed Manager.

We began weaning all the herds of calves on Sept 13 this year.  The picture above is a shot of the Boyd Herd as they were being weaned and processed. These calves weaned on Sept 14 had an adjusted weaning weight of 533 lbs. All the calves weaned well, and are started on feed.
